Serenoa repens, also known as saw palmetto, is the name of a dwarf palm tree native to the South-Eastern cost of the United States of America. Known for its rebalancing action on the hormone system, it takes part in the inhibition of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that stimulates cellular proliferation and is responsible for prostatic hyperplasia. Its action can counteract the increase in prostate volume that causes bladder compression and urethral stricture resulting in difficult urination and incomplete bladder emptying.
