Melatonin is a hormone that is produced in our brain and regulates the circadian rhythms in our body. Its secretion depends on light: When the light stimulus reaches the retina, a signal is sent to the brain which inhibits its secretion. Darkness, by contrast, stimulates its release. Melatonin production is minimal in the first few months of life, it increases in youth, and then decreases again in the late adulthood.
